Take One Tune
Written by Sue Murphy

tothandsharmony.jpgThe Take One Tune project invites all schools in the UK and across the world to take one tune and make it your own. The result, we hope, will be a fantastic rich collaboration of music.

Each school will be able to upload their work onto the easiCOP Take One Tune project pages for all to share.  This could include pictures, sounds and video, as well as information about the instruments and how music influences you and your community.

Mr Jonathan Woodley, Head of Music at Kesgrave High School, has kindly provided Gorseland with the tune for Take One Tune and explains how the notes were chosen.

The notes for the tune were derived from the word “EASICOP” by using the following key:-
Letter of the Alphabet      A  I  O  P
Musical Note A B C  E  B  D A  B  E  E

This produced the following notes:-

E A E B C A B

Using these notes, Jonathan Woodley produced the following tune:

TakeOneTune

usl_-_cone_pipes.jpgWhat do you need to know to be able to join in?

There are only 2 rules...

You must only use these 7 easiCOP notes

      E A E B C A B

Your tune must start with them in this order.

After that it's up to you!

For your version of Take One Tune, you could

  • recreate the original Take One Tune, using instruments and, of course, voice
  • use some of the rhythm patterns with the given notes
  • just use the easiCOP notes the way you want

Click 'read more' at the bottom of the page for full instructions and to find out how the tune was created. (Please be patient... it may take 10 seconds to load!!) Or click here to see Take This Tune...

tradeastbandhakgediyasml.jpgNow that Gorseland Primary School have launched Take One Tune, they are preparing their version of the tune, which they hope to take to their twin school, Kudawella in Sri Lanka in February. Both schools intend to record their 'musical journey' using video, sound files, pictures and stories, which will be uploaded to the website for all to share. Kudawella will be using their Traditional Eastern Band instruments. They were recently purchased with the prize money received for their iCookBook website, which won  last year's BT Global Design Challenge Hothouse!

With your help, Gorseland hope music will travel across the World (via the Internet!), as UK and global partner schools join in.

What will we learn from each other by taking part in this music project?

Take This Tune...

Kesgrave High School's Head Of Music, Mr Jonathan Woodley,

has kindly put together the following notes, rhythms

and has written a tune for Take One Tune!

 TakeOneTune

There are only 2 rules you must follow

You must only use these 7 notes

E A E B C A B

Your tune must start with them in that order.

After that it's up to you!

For your version of Take One Tune, you could

  • recreate the original Take One Tune, using instruments and, of course, voice
  • use some of the rhythm patterns with the given notes
  • just use the easiCOP notes to complete the tune the way you want

You may choose how fast or slow your tune is played.

You could also add words and maybe even create a dance for your tune.

Once your work is complete, we would like you to record your performance, both in video and sound files where possible, and upload it to the easiCOP Take One Tune project for all to see. You could add information about your instruments and how you created your tune. We would also like to know about your local or traditional music and how music influences you and your community.

Your pictures, stories and the tune itself can then be shared around the world!

Here's Jon's explanation of how he produced the tune:

In my version the notes were played forwards and then backwards for the piano tune:

For the second part of the tune the notes were played forwards and backwards and also played twice:

The marimba and bass guitar parts are also based on these notes

Bass:-

                                                           Bass

Marimba (this has an echo effect):-

There is also a chord part played on a long held sound.

 The Rhythms

This piece has the following four rhythms:-

On the recording these are played on Bass Drum, Hi-Hat, Bongos and Go-Go bells.

                    Bass Drum                                     Hi-Hat                                       Bongos

Go-Go bells

My version of the tune has a slow build up and sounds a little sad and thoughtful; yours may be happier and faster.

                                                            Jonathan Woodley

Gorseland's Official Version of Take One Tune

The children of Year 5 worked in groups over a number of weeks to produce their versions of Take One Tune.

This version by 'Dynamite' has been chosen as the 'official' Gorseland version.

and Dynamite's the slower version...

Because all the children worked so hard on this project, their versions of Take One Tune have been uploaded too. We hope you enjoy listening as much as the children enjoyed creating them.

Mrs Taylor has been working with her Year 5 class to create their own tune, which we will take to Kudawella school in February. Mr Trinder's Year 3 class have been working on their versions and the children are trying out their musical ICT skills too!  We'll keep you up to date with other news, as Take One Tune travels through our school.

Having a go...

I couldn't resist uploading this video of children at Gorseland School 'having a go' at creating there own version of Take One Tune. The children are working in small groups during their music lessons to create their tunes and I found this group in the school staffroom practising their first few notes.

dr_rana_visit_to_gorseland_3.jpgTaking One Tune!!

Dr Rana, Principle of Katha School in India, recently visited Gorseland Primary School to find out more about Take One Tune and to share Katha's project, Learning From The World.

Gorseland hope to join Katha's project when they return to school in the New Year and look forward to hearing and sharing Katha's version of Take One Tune (and hopefully their twin school Nacton's too!)
